There are places we return to not because anything is waiting for us there, but because something once was.
A particular table. A familiar order. The chair someone always chose. The small rituals that felt ordinary until they became memories.
Table No. 4 came from thinking about grief in that form, as the quiet ways we keep someone present after they are gone.
She couldn’t remember his voice anymore.
So she came back to the place that still could.
Some places do more than hold our memories. They remember the people we once were, the conversations that changed us, and the voices time slowly takes away.
This microstory is inspired by Table No. 4 from Between Sips, my collection of fifteen stories unfolding across fifteen café tables.
Sometimes memory lives in photographs and old messages. Sometimes, it lives in a café that still remembers where they used to sit.
Which place still remembers someone for you?
